Our
volunteers
Each week, on a Friday afternoon, a team of volunteers – an editor, readers, and support team – meet at Sackville House to record a selection of local news items and magazine articles, which are sent out free of charge to our listeners.
We have six teams of three news readers, one of whom is the editor. The editor chooses items primarily from the Sussex Express to record for our listeners. As the Sussex Express comes out on a Friday morning, the Editor has to be able to edit on that morning. We aim to have approximately 30 minutes of news items.
In addition, we have six further teams who record items for the magazine. The editor in each of these teams is free to choose any excerpts from poetry or prose that interest them, and they hope will interest our listeners. The magazine is also about 30 minutes long.
We have three support teams of two people, one who manages the recording & copying and the other is responsible for the distribution of the pouches containing the USB sticks.
We have a ‘bank’ of people who are happy to be substitutes when necessary. Often volunteers join as substitutes and graduate to more regular roles when a vacancy occurs. We have plenty of substitute readers at present. We are really keen to recruit more volunteers to be part of a support team. Training is provided for all the roles.
The commitment is roughly 45 minutes every 6 weeks as a reader or editor – with additional time to prepare material for editors – and about 3 hours every three weeks for support teams.
